Today is the birthday of Bauhaus / Love and Rockets bassist and songwriter David J.
Love and Rockets is a band that has been a mainstay in the alternative music scene since the 1980s. Formed by former members of the gothic rock band Bauhaus, Love and Rockets’ music has evolved over the years, incorporating elements of post-punk, psychedelic rock, and even pop. In this article, we’ll take a closer look at the band’s discography and explore their musical journey from their early days to their solo projects.
Love and Rockets was formed in 1985 by Daniel Ash, David J, and Kevin Haskins. Their early music was heavily influenced by their Bauhaus roots, with dark and moody tracks that incorporated elements of post-punk and gothic rock. Their debut album Seventh Dream of Teenage Heaven, released in 1985, featured tracks like “If There’s a Heaven Above” and “Saudade” that showcased their unique sound and style. Despite their Bauhaus influence, Love and Rockets quickly established themselves as a distinct and innovative band in their own right.
Love and Rockets’ music began to evolve in the late 80s and early 90s, with a shift towards a more psychedelic sound. This can be heard in tracks like “Kundalini Express” from 1986’s Express and “No New Tale to Tell” from their 1987 album Earth, Sun, Moon. The band continued to experiment with different sounds and styles throughout the 90s, with Daniel Ash and David J both pursuing successful solo careers. Despite their individual projects, Love and Rockets continued to release albums and tour together, showcasing their versatility and longevity in the alternative music scene.
Daniel Ash released several solo albums, including Coming Down and Foolish Thing Desire, which showcased his unique blend of rock, pop, and electronic music. David J also released several solo albums, including Songs from Another Season and Estranged, which featured his signature dark and introspective lyrics. Kevin Haskins, the band’s drummer, also pursued other projects, including playing for Daniel Ash’s experimental electronic music project Tones on Tail. Despite their individual projects, the members of Love and Rockets continued to collaborate and support each other’s work over the years.
“Haunted When the Minutes Drag” is another track from Seventh Dream of Teenage Heaven.
